On Saturday, August 8, we're hosting a very special edition of iPod Jukebox as part of Brightest Young Things' weekly Summer Camp pool party. Bring your iPod and you can spin up to 12 minutes of whatever music you want while relaxing, working on your tan or splashing around in the water. (A total 180 from Saint-Ex's basement, no?)

The party is held at the Capitol Skyline Hotel and runs from noon to 7. The iPod Jukebox portion runs until 3:30, or maybe a little later, but you'll want to show up early to reserve a deck chair or couch.

As hard as it is for us to believe, June 2009 marks iPod Jukebox's five-year anniversary at Cafe Saint-Ex. For the first time in our 4+ years at Cafe Saint-Ex, iPod Jukebox is taking a vacation. Along with the rest of the French-speaking world, your hosts will be somewhere else in August, though neither of them will be tanning on the Côte d'Azur. Normal service will resume on the second Wednesday in September.

Just to be clear: If you come by on August 13, you'll hear some fantastic disco and house, courtesy of DJs Chris Burns and Ed Dudes, but they're not going to play whatever's on your iPod. Sorry.

Hello Everyone,

iPod Jukebox is back at Cafe Saint-Ex's Gate 54 Lounge on Wednesday, and we look forward to hearing what you're listening to these days -- new discoveries, old favorites, or, in the case of the Wedding Present's excellent "El Rey," new discoveries from old favorites.

One note as you're thinking about what to play: In recent months, we've had some of our MP3Js coming up into the booth with us and mixing their playlists live. Saint-Ex's staff has raised some concerns about this, so as of this week, we're going to require everyone to give us their MP3 player with a playlist already created. If you want to blend a few songs to create a medley, that's fine, but we'll have to ask you to create it at home, using an audio program like Audacity (audacity.sourceforge.net) and then bring the resulting MP3 for us to play. Sorry if this causes problems for anyone.

iPod Jukebox started as a one-off night at Galaxy Hut in April 2004. We weren't even sure if anyone would show up, let alone bring their MP3 players and music to share. But 13 people dropped by to play some tunes, and we realized that maybe, just maybe, we were on to something.

Fast forward to 2008 and iPod Jukebox is still going strong, having been featured in The Washington Post and on NPR. We even were interviewed for German Television. And we couldn't have done it without you. Please come help us celebrate at Saint-Ex on April 9, and look for a much bigger party in June, when we enter our fifth year of events on 14th Street.

We're looking for romantic ballads in iTunes, queuing up romantic films and getting ready to dim the lights at Gate 54. This can only mean one thing: It's time for the annual iPod Jukebox Valentine's Day party.

Hi Everyone,

This is a very short note to remind you that we're back at Cafe Saint-Ex on Wednesday night for a special Beaujolais Nouveau edition of iPod Jukebox.* It's going to be business as usual: It starts at 9, you get 12 minutes to DJ, get there early for jazz happy hour with 25 percent off bottles of wine. We hope you can make it.

Last month was pretty busy, as you can see from the playlist posted below. Only three people got to DJ twice, not including your hosts.

Finally, the "Best of 2007 (So Far)" mix CD we mentioned last month is ready for you to download. Here's Fritz's description of it: "It started as a present for a friend who wanted some new music. The self-imposed constraints were that each song must have been released this year, either as a single or on an album, and they also had to have been played at iPod Jukebox between January and September."

We had some problems with the archives, but the links are now working on zShare. It's so big we had to split it:

Hello Everyone.

A few things you might want to know about:

1. We're back at Cafe Saint-Ex this week for the October edition of iPod Jukebox. Have you found the soundtrack for fall yet? We'd love to hear it. Playing your three or four favorite songs of all time would also be welcome. We're open to anything, really.

2. We had our first-ever iPhone users last month, so we know that iPod Jukebox is fully iPhone and iPod Touch compatible.

3. Fritz put together a mix CD of his favorite songs of 2007 that have been played at iPod Jukebox. If you'd like a copy, shoot us an e-mail and we'll either burn or send you a copy.

4. Some of you may have been to My Favorite Dress, the uber-excellent DJ night that Kathryn and her friend Holly run at Saint-Ex a few times a year. On Saturday, they're taking the show to the Black Cat, where they'll be spinning at Mousetrap, Washington's biggest and longest-running Britpop night. You won't want to miss it. It doesn't seem like a month since our last throwdown at Saint-Ex, but the time for another iPod Jukebox is upon us.

Thanks to everyone who came out to our very busy Third Anniversary Party in June. We had more people signed up to DJ than available timeslots, but there's another chance to take control of the decks this Wednesday night.

When it's your turn, everyone in the bar gets to listen to the songs you selected.

This month marks three years of iPod Jukebox events at Cafe Saint-Ex. We (and our iPods) have come a long way since we first began hosting events on 14th Street, and it's been a lot of fun.

Valentine's Day Update

This year, the calendar gods have decided that Valentine's Day falls on the second Wednesday of the month, which is when we usually host iPod Jukebox. We could complain or reschedule, but we're going to make the best of it.

As we did last February, we're inviting everyone to come out and play a set tangentially related to the holiday, whether that means 12 minutes of blissed-out love songs or 12 minutes of honky tonk about how you got cheated on and when she left she took your heart and your dog with her. Or both.

We'll play some "romantic" movies on the flatscreen and dim the lights to help set the mood.

A few things to keep in mind:

1. Something that's cheesy and funny for 30-45 seconds is not necessarily funny for 5 minutes. A hair metal power ballad or two may be amusing. Twelve minutes of them could be excruciating.

2. Dashboard Confessional, Fall Out Boy or Panic! At the Disco are grounds for immediate ejection.

3. Public displays of affection are gross.

4. There may be drink specials.

If you have a date on the 14th – or want to forget that you don't – we'll remind you that Cafe Saint-Ex offers a 25 percent discount on all bottles of wine during the Jazz Happy Hour, which runs from 7 to 9. We like the Chinon and Shooting Star's Blue Franc, and the music is a solid mix of cool '60s and '70s jazz and funk.

As always, iPod Jukebox starts at 9 p.m. and there's no cover. Cafe Saint-Ex is located at 1847 14th St. NW, and the closest Metro station is U Street/African-American Civil War Memorial/Cardozo.

The date of September's iPod Jukebox has now been confirmed. We'll be at Saint-Ex on September 6, the first Wednesday of the month. If you show up on the 13th -- our regularly scheduled date -- you'll hear some great music from DJs Sad and Lonely, but they're not going to let you play your own.

Though the date has changed, everything else will remain the same: We'll be there sometime after 8:30 for signups, the first iPod plays at 9 and everything wraps up around 1:30 a.m. Any questions? Send us an e-mail via the link on the right.

Apparently we need to watch more PBS. If we did, we would have known that iPod Jukebox was mentioned on "The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer" on May 15. The topic? The "technical and cultural impact" of the iPod. (You can watch the segment or read a transcript here.)

JEFFREY BROWN: Given such concerns, it's fascinating to see some new ways MP3 players are being used in many parts of society. At this Washington, D.C., nightclub, Cafe Saint-Ex, iPod users gather once a month to share favorite songs at an iPod jukebox night, individual choices blasting through the club, and perhaps creating a new musical community.

WASHINGTON, DC, IPOD USER: It's sort of revolutionizing the way people listen to music, because you can sort of surround yourself with your music at all times.

This means we were mentioned on both public television and public radio in a little over two weeks. We'd like to thank all the Americans (and their tax dollars) who made it possible.

Hello Everyone,

This is a quick message to let you know that iPod Jukebox is NOT at Saint-Ex this week. Yes, it's the second Wednesday of the month, but there's a special alumni happy hour in Gate 54. To prevent a rerun of December -- an alumni happy hour meant Saint-Ex hit capacity early and a lot of iPod Jukebox patrons didn't get in -- we've moved our night to next Wednesday, February 15.

Since this is the day after Valentine's Day, we're looking for creative anti-Valentine's Day setlists. You can take that sentiment any way you'd like, but we'll be awarding prizes for our favorites. Hopefully, they won't be pink shots.

Speaking of Black Tuesday, if you're looking for something to do on the 14th, we highly recommend My Favorite Dress, a night of "janglepop/twee/indierock/powerpop/shoegaze/garagerock" with the Holiday Girl and Kathryn Wildt (of the Cricklewood Massive), plus special guest The People's Champion. It's also at Cafe Saint-Ex, and starts at 10 p.m.

Two Updates

We just wanted to take a second to bring two items to your attention.

iPod Jukebox is next Wednesday, Sept. 14, at Cafe Saint-Ex. No themes, no special "secret" songs -- just bring whatever you want to play for 12 minutes, hang out, drink good beer and listen to cool music.

But before that happens, the Cricklewood Massive is making a special guest DJing appearance at Bluestate on the Black Cat's backstage Saturday night. DJs Seeking Irony and Leafblower are regulars at iPod Jukebox, and they invited us to join them this month. We'll be on first (beginning at 10) and we hope to see you there.

Thanks to everyone who came out last night. We'll have setlists up soon. There were two "secret songs" last night that were worth prizes for anyone who put them on their playlist(s). Laura played "Little Red Corvette" and was duly rewarded. Sadly, no one selected "Be Thankful For What You Got" by D.C. native William DeVaughn. That song, the biggest hit for DeVaughn, was covered by Massive Attack and sampled by N.W.A. (If you need a refresher, it's the mid-'70s R&B tune that repeats "Diamond in the back, sunroof top, diggin' the scene with a gangsta lean" in the chorus.)

It seems like our happy hour announcement has been buried under the extra-long playlist from July 13-14, and there's some confusion about what's going on this week.

Here's a recap: We're running a special happy hour (6 to 9 p.m.) edition of iPod Jukebox on Thursday, July 28, at Cafe Saint-Ex. It's sponsored by Zipcar. Anyone who plays songs with transportation themes will be eligible to win prizes from Zipcar. We (the Cricklewood Massive) have also chosen two "secret songs" about transportation. Play one (or both) and you win a prize that has nothing to do with Zipcar.

There will also be Yuengling specials.

In the original announcement, you may have noticed we knocked the set times back down to 10 minutes. This is because we have less time than usual and are expecting more people. If you've got a 12-minute list, please consider trimming it back. If you run over 12, you're going to get cut off. Sorry, but those are the rules.

In the meantime, you can console yourselves with this little piece of news: Zipcar has invited us to host a special happy hour edition of iPod Jukebox at Saint-Ex on July 28, from 6 to 9 p.m. (We've been Zipcar members for a while now, and find the car-sharing service pretty handy.) The event is open to members and non-members alike.

Here's the announcement, courtesy of Zipcar:

You have the best musical taste in the world. Everyone should know that, and if they don't, here's your chance to prove it! Zipcar and the Cricklewood Massive are hosting a special iPod Jukebox event on July 28 at Café Saint-Ex (1847 14th Street, near 14th and U).

Here's how it works: Come to the DJ booth and sign up for a timeslot. (first-come, first-served). When it's your turn, plug your iPod into the bar's sound system and play whatever you want for ten minutes. As a special treat, car and transportation themed songs will be the order of the night. Anyone playing songs with car or transportation themes will be entered to win driving credit, as well as other prizes. Next week, we celebrate two of our favorite events back to back: iPod Jukebox takes place Wednesday night, and Bastille Day is Thursday. In honor of la Fête Nationale, we're going to try something new.

From 9 p.m. to midnight, everything will run as usual. Beginning at 12:01 (or as close as possible), we're asking DJs to switch to French music. French language is not required, because there are plenty of good bands with English lyrics, or no words at all. (But don't all of you go download La Mome Piaf at once.) Songs sung in French by non-French artists (i.e. Parlez-Vous Freezepop?) are fine, too.

If your Francophone setlist impresses us, there may be a reward.

iPod Jukebox has made the front page of the Washington Post. We've been interviewed on German television. Now we can say we've made the 11 O'Clock news.

We were on our way to Saint-Ex last night when owner Mike Benson called, telling us that Channel 9 News was at the bar and wanted to talk to us about iPod Jukebox. Reporter Nancy Yamada interviewed several patrons and Saint-Ex staffers; If you didn't get a chance to TiVo it, you can see the video here.

The Way We Were

Last month, we experimented with letting people sign up for certain timeslots (9:36 p.m., 10 p.m., 11:24 p.m.), but it didn't quite work out. On Wednesday, we're going back to a more familiar method: You sign up; we give you a number; you start DJing when your number appears on the board next to the DJ booth.

As always, MP3Js can start signing up between 8:30 and 9.

We're celebrating our first year of iPod Jukebox at Cafe Saint-Ex on Wednesday with (a) treats and (b) a new way to sign up for timeslots. Instead of the old first-come, first-served method, you'll be able to choose a start time (i.e. 10 p.m., 10:12, 11:24). All times are approximate -- we know that everyone's set won't run exactly 12 minutes -- we think this is a good way to give people an idea of what time they'll be going on.

iPod Jukebox Turns 21

Last night -- wait, it's still this morning -- we set a new record for DJs at an iPod Jukebox event with 21 MP3Js signing up to play their tunes. (There were 23 if you count the night's hosts.) We would like to thank everyone who came out, especially those who brought their iPods.

We'll have the setlists up ASAP.

USA Today Discovers iPod Jukebox

Better Late Than Never: iPod Jukebox got a mention (though not by name) in a Feb. 1 USA Today story about "iPod America." Here's the relevant bit:

iPods also are turning the average club-goer into a tastemaker for the masses. Cafe Saint-Ex in Washington, D.C., hosts a monthly party in its Gate 54 lounge during which iPod owners are allowed to plug their devices into the sound system and give fellow revelers a taste of their own collections.

"We've found that everyone wants to be a DJ for 15 minutes," General Manager John Snellgrove says. "Most of the music people play is pretty modern. Sometimes things are a bit off, but nobody boos or anything. A lot of times people wind up posting their set lists on Web sites so people can see what music they heard."

We're looking forward to seeing everyone on Wednesday night. We'll get started around 9 p.m.
